Outline and evaluate the working memory model Essay Baddeley and Hitch (1974) developed an alternative model of short-term memory which they called the working memory model. The working memory model consists of four components. The central executive which controls and co-ordinates the operation of two subsystems, the phonological loop and the visuo-spatial sketchpad. The central executive controls attention and coordinates the actions of the other components, it can briefly store information, but has a limited capacity. The phonological loop consists of two parts, the articulatory control system and the phonological store. The articulatory control system (the inner voice) where information is rehearsed sub vocally and has a capacity of about 2 seconds. The phonological store (the inner ear) stores information in speech-based form, the speech input is held for a brief duration. For years the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has trudged on dotted with what has currently been accepted as twists and turns of small successes and persistent failure of the peace process at large. The underlying issues are as broad as the range of interventions that can be used to solve them but the political will to enforce recommendations has been lacking ever since Israel self declared its independence and Palestine in collaboration with the Arab world declared war on the Israeli state. However, the complexity of the eventualities that led to the collapse of the peace process can not forever prevent the success of any future interventions so long as key issues are straightened out. As the peace process remains stalled, any future intervention will have to desist from pushing partial agreements and instead advocate for a comprehensive and sustainable7 final status agreement. There is need to avoid sequenced confidence building strategies that had been prevalent with the past peace process negotiations. This is crucial to prevent the peace process from becoming a hostage to security. Instead both parties in the negotiation table should be encouraged to adopt a strategy that promotes a mutual and comprehensive ceasefire by both the Israelis and the Palestinians (Brown2009). The Israeli government should freeze all construction developments in occupied territories because these settlements are in contravention of international law. Abidance to such preliminary conditions is critical in driving the negotiations to sustainable resolution of underlying issues and subsequently the charting out of a final status document that is agreeable for all the negotiating parties. As the international community; the United States included, continues to provide support towards the democratization and the creation of the Palestinian state, it should be understood that such sovereignty cannot be achieved under conditions akin to military occupation, thus the ceasefires. It is a fact that with America spearheading the peace process, Palestinians and the Arab world will never believe in the impartiality of the mediator. Thus, if America is to continue being the mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the United States must restore its credibility as an impartial and honest broker by adopting an even handed role. The nature of America’s Middle East foreign policies is a slap in the face of their supposed stance of impartiality. The military and economic cooperation with the Israelis will only serve to advance the understanding that America can only drive the negotiation to endpoints that are in congruence with its own interests and values such as the advancement of democracy and equal rights. Such positions even if unbiased in America’s perspective may not be in congruence with the desires of the Palestinian populace (Avineri 2001; Baddar 2007; Carpenter 2008). The failure of the United States to exert considerable pressure on Israel on important concessions of the peace process negotiations remain a great stumbling block to the realization of sustainable peace. As opposed to earlier formulations of the peace process, a sustainable peace process should allow the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process to be driven by principles of international law. This would mark a paradigm shift from the current status quo. Basing the peace negotiations on international law ensures the neutrality of mediation. Moreover, under international law, Israel will have to stop settlements in territories that are not recognized under international law as well as improving on the definition and clarity of negotiations based on neutrality. Additionally, such a shift would make the negotiations and the final resolution of the conflict acceptable to the international community. Only international law can level the playing field in the peace process negotiations. If such a strategy is used the final resolution will not only be reflection of justice but also ensure that the fundamental rights of the Palestinians are respected. If negotiations proceed as per the current status quo, the final resolutions that are not in congruence to international law may not be easy to implement. The international community and especially the United Nations should be involved in the pursuit of novel approaches of solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (Daalder et al 2006). This call is not only urgent but late in coming. The failure of the Israeli-Palestinian peace processes has been partly attributable to the insistence of keeping out the United Nation in the peace negotiations. The specially scripted negotiations such as the Oslo Process and even the RoadMap to peace by various mediatory parties have only led to persistent stagnation and hopelessness among the Palestinians (Greenstein 2003; Rubenberg 2003). It is only in the best interest of the international community that the United Nations steps in to give the Palestinians hope and steer the peace process to sustainability. Finally, it should not be lot on all negotiating parties that any strategy should conclusively address and resolve the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In essence, the sidestepping of the real causative issues in the conflict has been at the core of the failures of the peace process. Infact, the conflict only arose when the native Palestinians were dispossessed of their land during the establishment of the State of Israel. Moreover, when it comes to the question of the Palestinian refugees, Israel has consistently refused to make an alteration on its position preferring instead to disregard the existence of legitimate rights of these populations. A Critical Analysis Of Jean Twenges Generation Jean Twenges Generation Me gives amazing insight about people born after 1970. It talks about how different we are to our parents and how different will be compared to our children. We have become a generation focused on our own ideals and future. Weve also become less concerned with religion and societal rules. It contrasts and compares us to the older generations, and it also discusses us as a young generation, with all our faults and merits. Twenge begins her novel stating we are a much more informal and accepting society than we once were (pg. 18). Our social rules are not as strict as they were several years ago. We let people believe what they want to believe, and dress the way they want to dress without judgement or correction. We have become a generation, as Twenge puts it, As long as I believe in myself, I really do not care what others think. We are a generation that only cares about making decisions relating to ones self and seek only personal gain. The author compares our generation to several films, saying that most of them are about the social norms putting the individual down and that person rising above that. For the most part, I agree with what ahe is saying. We are obsessed with our ideas, our motives, our decisions, and we dont care what others think. We try to rise above what people normally expect. We were raised constantly letting us know that we are the future. Everyone put it our heads as children th at we have to become someone important, or change the world. Our generation also believes that the decisions we make are always correct, and we are never wrong. We are raised in a way that we do not receive rules of normal society. Students dont recognize the authority of teachers, believing that their beliefs and insight is completely correct compared to the professionals. The rules of marriage and dating are gone. Profanity has become part of our normal everyday speech. Cheating and infringement has increased highly. Its the new social trend. You do what you want, what makes you happy, and you dont care what other people think. We are raised, being constantly told we are all equals. We are in the midst of a revolution of what are considered acceptable social rules which define this generation as being radically different to the cultural ethos of previous decades. We have evolved into a generation obsessed with trying to show that we are able to do anything we want. Look at what I can say, look what I can do and no one to stop me. Swearing is the perfect example. I remember saying my first swear word and not a single person came running tow ards me to stop me. College parties are filled with alcohol and in some cases involve illegal drugs, and we only partake in them because we can. Parents correct their children, only to see their children do the same thing again a couple days later. Constantly pushing against the wall, showing trying to show that there isnt one. This is mostly due to the fact, that we are raised to believe that we could be anything we want to be. We created the belief that feeling good about yourself is more important than good performance. So much self esteem can turn into a negative effect which Twenge says its that we become, overly focused on themselves and lack empathy for others. She even introduce religion into the picture. Saying that we become less concerned about religion, and that over 60% of our generation is atheist. Believing in a faith has become less restrictive as the years gone by. In some ways this chapter is spot on in the way our generation has come to be. What surprised me is that this novel didnt take into consideration cultures. In Non-American cultures, any disrespect towards authority or misbehavior is usually countered with physical punishment. Even religion is a major factor, with most families drowning their children in religion since birth. In America however, misbehavior is usually countered with taking something away or grounding a child. Religion takes a backseat as well, with most families no t even encouraging or forcing their children to follow their religion. Its become common in our culture for someone to respect the fact the some people dont believe in God, whereas several years ago it wouldve been against societys laws. We have become a generation so concerned with ourselves and our future. If we dont get what we want we become depressed or upset. She discusses more about this in the second half in her book. One of the major differences when comparing our generation to an older generation is high increase in people who experience anxiety, stress, or even depression. Our growing tendency to tongue punch a fart box put the self first leads to unparalleled freedom, but it also creates an enormous amount of pressure on us to stand alone. This is the downside of the focus on the self when we are fiercely independent and self-sufficient, our disappointments loom large because we have nothing else to focus on. We grow up being taught that we cant expect our parents to help us forever. Schools teaches us independence and the ability to try and work alone. In some cases you would work in groups, but it starts off awkward and weird as to how to approach the situation or problem presented. We also try to go off to pursuit our own individual dreams and goals, and we our taught to love everything about ourselves. Its no wonder why we eventually develop loneliness. Were encouraged throughout our chil dhood to develop our own personal interests, our own goals, our own method of supporting our self. We lose sight in how to preform in a team, or how to engage in mutual relationships. We develop anxiety and depression because of loneliness and isolation. Many of these cases occur because of school. College is the huge stepping stone in an individuals education. College teaches you want you want to learn, and makes you experienced in the field that you want to go in. Kids are always told that their special and unique individuals that can achieve anything if they just follow their dreams. They expect to get into the best colleges, and receive high paying jobs where they constantly to put in their 2 cents. Where in fact only a few will get into the best colleges and fewer will receive jobs where they need to get your input on a daily basis. I agree with the beginning of this chapter, then it continues to something where only people who dont learn after 10 will expect out of life. While were little were always told that we are the most special, and that our ideas are unique. What ends up happening however is that you gradually begin to realize how life is like, and realize what job you want to get into. Everyone expects to have a high paying job, but people do realize that you do h ave to start small. College is a tool that helps you get a job, not start off big. What really got me is that people will develop depression because they dont realize this. I dont think thats the case. When your a kid you believe everything your told. To get through school and actually like learning your told these wonderful things about yourself as encouragement. When you get older you become less and less gullible, and the teaching method becomes different. We dont develop depression because we are suddenly not told that we are the greatest. We start to see how the world works and comprehend more complex things. Telling us that we are special and unique just wont cut it. Pressure however from societies standards can cause our depression or anxiety. Since were not expecting certain things, it may come as a shock or too much to handle. Which is probably why we find that bearing all the rules of society might be too much and its better if we dont worry about them. This generations tolerance to breaking societies rules is more than any generation before it. Many things like marriage before sex, or not caring if a woman becomes a construction worker. Twenge spends an entire chapter speaking about sex and how it ties to our generation. The tie to individualism is obvious: do what feels good for you, and ignore the rules of society. We approve more of premarital sex than generations before us. We are also more accepting of casual sex, rather than just having sex for reproduction purposes. We are also incredibly more accepting when it comes to things that other generations would look down upon. For instance, the job placement for women has become more incredibly diverse than it ever has been. In older generations, it was common for women to be a housewife and take care of the children. Now more and more women join the workforce, and are in jobs that are considered manly but we dont pay any mind. We are also more accepting of people who would be considered different by how they look. We are less likely to believe in moral absolutes, so we are tolerant and accept diversity in all its forms. I grew up learning history with the rest of class. We learned of the civil rights and women rights movement. We werent taught how to hate som eone or a group of people. We learned that everyone is equal and has a equal opportunity in life. I think however that its not just our generation thats become more accepting. I believe that since the older generations have learned to accept others even if their different, influenced our outcome. We drop societal rules that we feel are bad and not worthy of following. As a new generation we have become more open and accepting than any other before it. Twenge begins to conclude her book stating how we come so far as a generation. has the highest self-esteem of any generation, but also the most depression. We are more free and equal, but also more cynical. We expect to follow our dreams, but are anxious about making that happen. In summary, we feel compelled to follow our dreams and if we dont achieve them, we lose hope in life. But we are also free, of social rules, of restrictions, and life. We can make all the choices in the world, and it doesnt matter what other people think. In some cases this novel is spot on in describing our generation. While it doesnt describe in detail what every single persons outlook on life, it does generalize it rather well. However, Im still upset over the fact that they didnt mention once about cultures and how each one deals with this generation. While the book may describe a typical American life, the books generalization on this generation may not be the same in India, or China. I for one, agree w ith some parts of the book, while others I find ridiculous to comprehend. Generation Me gives amazing insight as to how our generation developed and how it compares to past generations. It shows how while other generations may value certain rules of society, we just decide on what feels good to us. However, it also showed the downside. Hemmingway Influences Hemmingway’s Literary Influences As one of America’s greatest writers, Ernest Hemmingway recounted his personal life experiences to create his novels. Hemmingway lead an interesting life, filled with romance, travel, and adventure. It was this lifestyle that provided him with much of the material that he used to write his greatest novels. Writing was more of a story telling exercise for Hemmingway, because he had firsthand experience at most of what he wrote about. Hemmingway was also influenced by many of the people he met throughout his life, including women, authors, and news journalists. Hemmingway was born in his family’s home in Oak Park, Illinois on July 18, 1899. It was here that he was raised with the conservative Midwestern values of strong religion, hard work, and self-determination. His father taught him to fish and hunt along the shores and in the forest around Lake Michigan. His love of the outdoors was cultivated here, and would influence his writing later in life. Hemmingway’s mother was very creative, with a special talent for singing. Although Ernest never took to music, he inherited his mother’s creativity. (Online ref #1) The first writing influence in Hemmingway’s life came from his first job, as a reporter at the Kansas City Star newspaper. The Star’s style and usage book advocated using short sentences, active verbs, authenticity, clarity, smoothness, and writing in a positive tone. Teaching Philosophy I feel that education is not only based on the basics, but built on them. To me, creative expression revolves somewhat around those basics that are taught and also around the areas in life that are unseen, or thought. Creativity opens a person’s mind, to not just focus on what has been taught to us, which is information stored in the left side of the brain, but also to utilize our own ideas and imagination to express ourselves, which utilizes the right side of the brain (which is rarely used in the average individual). By doing creative things that use the imagination, it helps to strengthen that part of the brain which has been weakened with time. As children we feed that part of the brain, all is growing at once. But once formal education is introduced, that vision is narrowed to the point that it becomes lost and usually never recovered. What we are taught contradicts vision in art and destroys the vision of an artist unless given the proper instruction an d guidance on how to combine the known knowledge acquired and what is seen in actuality. A class that offers this guidance but to have freedom in a pressure-free environment that allows for creativity is what I desire from my class because for me, the art program when I was a child lacked. Art was mostly for holidays, something to take home to your mom for a certain special occasion, not for individual expression. I think out of all the philosophies that would best suit my desires in an art class would be the existentialist approach. Existentialism rejects the existence of any source of objective, authoritative truth other than the individual themselves, in which that individual determines for themselves what is right / wrong, true / false, and beautiful / ugly. Existentialism fits perfectly for an art program in that it gives the student a chance to have freedom of thought to be as creative as they like without something/ someone controlling what they do. In the existentialist class, students are allowed to choose their own medium, like prose, poetry, art, or music, and evaluate their own performance and sometimes each others performance.

Comparing Hurston’s Books, Seraph on the Suwannee and Their Eyes Were Watching God I found both books, Seraph on the Suwannee and Their Eyes Were Watching God to be very well written, yet I found it very ironic and almost funny to compare the two. Although it may not have been intentional, Hurston uses, what can be called, race reversals to describe Janie and Arvay. Janie is a not-so-typical black woman who is confident and while she is somewhat submissive to her husbands, she has more integrity than her white counterpart, Arvay. The text says when describing her unique beauty, that "the men notice her firm buttocks like she had grape fruits/ in her hip pockets; the great rope of black hair swinging to her/ waist and unraveling in the wind like a plume." Arvay, on the other hand, is "teasing to the fancy of many men," but she is described as, "pretty if you liked delicate-made girls/†¦ (and) could easily be overlooked." The irony of this comparison lies in the fact that unlike life during the time period that the story is written, Janie is seen as an icon of inner-beauty and strength; Arvay is cute, but she isn't as strong. In some of the other literature in this course and others, black women are written as strong characters, but many of them don't live the life that Janie lived. She appeared to have more choices than most and she acted upon her feelings rather than suffering in many cases. She falls in love with her last two husbands without feeling as if she were being raped or forced to do unnecessary things. Unlike her mother, grandmother and other black women, particularly slaves, she is given the chance to be feminine and complete her duties as a wife without subtle forms of torture. I feel that Hurston is using her imagination to "get back" at white women in a sense because she shapes Arvay's character as the one who is slightly oppressed. When the story begins, Arvay is upset with her sister because she "takes" the man that Arvay wants to marry. Because she feels that a piece of the life that she wanted to have (the life of a preacher's wife) is taken away from her, she tries to go into seclusion and ends up marrying a man that she persuaded to love. Her first time having sex with Jim is written as a near rape: "A tearing sound of starched fabric, and the garment was being dragged ruthlessly down her legs.
